About This Place

Situated in the heart of Downtown Winnipeg within the historic Hotel Fort Garry, Oval Room Brasserie offers a refined dining experience that artfully blends early 20th-century charm with contemporary culinary touches. The moment you step inside, you’re enveloped by a grand yet welcoming atmosphere where the elegantly restored interiors echo the elegance of the restaurant’s 1913 origins.

Oval Room Brasserie’s menu is a sophisticated celebration of continental cuisine with subtle Italian influences, showcasing dishes that balance classic comfort with fresh, vibrant flavors. Begin your meal with standout starters like the crispy, tender calamari or the steaming, succulent steamed shrimp dumplings. For salad lovers, selections such as the crisp Caesar Salad and the bright, flavorful Balthazar Salad provide refreshing complements to heartier options.

Brunch is a highlight here, with offerings like the indulgently fluffy Brioche French Toast, perfectly made Eggs Benedict with luscious hollandaise, and the elegantly simple Avocado Toast. Each dish bursts with thoughtful ingredients and skilled execution, making every bite a moment to savor. The Burger Week Burger and the prime rib embody robust, satisfying flavors, while the Veal Meatloaf and Mac and Cheese offer rich, soul-warming indulgence. Don’t miss the French Onion Soup Gratinée, a deeply comforting classic, though seasoned boldly enough to leave a memorable impression.

Complement your meal with one of their expertly crafted cocktails—favorites include the vibrant Truffle Negroni and the timeless Old Fashioned—that are as refreshing and artfully balanced as they are visually stunning. This attention to cocktails demonstrates the brasserie’s commitment to a complete sensory dining experience.

Service at Oval Room Brasserie is frequently praised for its warmth and attentiveness; from the friendly reception to knowledgeable servers like Sarah, Paul, and Roan, you’ll feel genuinely cared for throughout your visit. The setting is elegant and intimate, though some diners have noted that tables sit fairly close together, adding a slight buzz of shared conviviality but also limiting privacy.

In terms of pricing, expect a premium that reflects both the quality of ingredients and the exceptional historic ambiance. Dining here feels like a special occasion—a place to indulge in generous portions amidst the grandeur of one of Winnipeg’s most iconic landmarks.

Whether you’re looking for a sophisticated brunch, a memorable dinner, or a refined space to enjoy expertly made cocktails, Oval Room Brasserie delivers a beautiful fusion of flavors, history, and hospitality that resonates well beyond the plate.

I visited Oval Brassiere for lunch and dinner on different days. The food was okay and the drinks were really good and refreshing. The prices are on the higher side, but the elegant look and grand interior definitely make it feel like a special spot. One thing to note is that the tables are quite close to other tables /chairs can hear conversations from other diners.

Wonderful old school charm dining experience in Downtown Winnipeg’s Hotel Fort Garry. Seperate review for that. This restaurant was recently refurbished and renovated to bring it back to its original appearance and feel from when it opened in 1913. Great turn of the century big railroad charm and looks. The menu was excellent with a continental menu u with a bit of Italian flavors to it. Note there is a fabulous Italian restaurant called Vida in the hotel too. I had the 24 hour braised Chuck Flat. It was a generous portion and delicious. Barely had to use my knife - fall apart. Excellent potato puree and vegetables. Had an espresso martini which was very good. As well as two cocktails and both great. Also had salmon Benny for breakfast and it was excellent. I loved the crusted bread instead of English muffin. Much better. The serving staff was excellent. Had four different servers during our stay. All four were excellent. Very classy and delicious experience.

Oval Brasserie is a beautiful restaurant set in an elegant hotel - the space feels refined yet welcoming. The food was excellent, from a fresh Caesar salad to perfectly cooked Arctic char and a rich, tender short rib. Service was outstanding — Sarah at the podium and Paul and Roan on the floor made me feel genuinely cared for and respected. A perfect mix of atmosphere, cuisine, and hospitality. I will definitely return!

Oval Brasserie offers a beautiful dining experience within an iconic hotel setting. The ambiance is elegant, and the service was attentive. Portions were generous, making it a great spot for those who appreciate hearty servings. The food quality was good overall, though not particularly outstanding. The French onion soup, while flavorful, leaned too heavily on the salt. On the other hand, the mussels were impressive—the meat was notably large and satisfying.

We had gone here this year for our work Christmas dinner. When we got there they had a coat check which I thought was pretty cool, so I didn’t have to deal with my winter jacket at the table. Our server was really lovely, I’m sorry I don’t remember her name. I enjoyed the ‘Showgirl’ cocktail which was amazing! My coworkers had some espresso martinis, which they also thought were incredible! We all enjoyed a variety of their appetizers, Pickerel cake 10/10, baked Brie 10/10, the chickpea fries 12/10, garlic shrimp 10/10, calamari 10/10. For my meal I got the New York Striploin, I got medium rare, which was cooked to my liking, the mashed potatoes were delicious, I just though the asparagus could have a bit more seasoning or perhaps a sauce, they were just cooked and that was it, but other than that it was all really good! I also added a lobster tail on the side, it was a tad cold, but I thought the taste was delicious. We shared the crepe brûlée for dessert and wow was that also amazing! They were very prompt in removing empty plates or glasses from the table, I also enjoyed that there was a bit of time in between the appetizer and meal, to enjoy and talk. Also a very beautiful room, you could probably tell we had never been beacuse we kept looking around and at the ceiling. Overall a great time, Thankyou!

First time here. Its very expensive but very nice and beautiful. Ordered chicken ceasar salad. Was so delicious. Chicken was a bit hard on outside but so flavourful. Daughter ordered braised chuck flat beef steak. She loved it! Our waiter Justin was amazing. Very friendly. 5/5

Oval Room Brasserie We went to Oval Room Brasserie and were truly impressed. We tried the roasted beef sandwich with fries and the smoked salmon eggs benedict – both were absolutely delicious! The beef was tender and flavorful, and the eggs benedict was rich and perfectly balanced with the smoked salmon. A special thanks to Sara, the F&B Manager, who recommended the dishes — she was spot on! The staff were friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend for a relaxed and tasty meal. We'll definitely be back!
